Development History of Road Marking Removal Technology

07 2022/03 2022/03/07

Changes in traffic management plans, aging, damage and surface stains on old road markings will impede traffic flow and driving safety, making it necessary to remove the original markings.

Incomplete removal of old markings poses serious hazards to driving safety and traffic control. On the other hand, certain removal methods can strip markings thoroughly yet damage the pavement, mar road appearance and raise road maintenance costs. Therefore, selecting an appropriate road marking removal solution is critical. Below is a review of the development history of road marking removal technology.

1. Mechanical Grinding Removal Method

This method uses an engine to drive alloy grinding heads for high-speed rotation. Markings are abraded away through direct friction between grinding heads and the pavement. The equipment is generally equipped with a grinding depth adjuster and an automatic clutch for grinding heads. The depth regulator adjusts the pressure exerted by cutting heads on the road surface based on pavement conditions and marking coating types to achieve variable grinding depths. However, this grinding approach damages pavement, delivers low working speed and generates massive dust, failing to meet environmental protection standards.

2. Milling Removal Method

Milling removal relies on milling cutters to plane the pavement surface and eliminate markings. This method usually leaves prominent milling traces and causes pavement damage, so it is rarely adopted in practice.

3. Steel Wire Brush Grinding Removal Method

A steel wire brush remover uses power and transmission assemblies to drive wire brush discs to scrape off surface attachments and clear road markings. While it can remove markings relatively completely, its extremely low working speed renders it unsuitable for heavily trafficked road sections.

4. High-Pressure Water Jet Removal Method

Growing environmental awareness has raised stricter eco-friendly requirements for marking removal, giving rise to the high-pressure water jet removal method, which has gained wide popularity nationwide in recent years. Its core construction machine is the high-pressure water jet marking cleaner. The machine uses a pressurization system to eject high-speed water jets from nozzles. The powerful impact and cutting force of the jets penetrate deep into asphalt pores to strip off marking coatings. The treated pavement retains no residual paint and suffers zero damage, leaving a perfectly clean surface.

Conventional high-pressure water jet cleaners produce large volumes of wastewater during operation. The wastewater may stain pavement or seep into asphalt pores and damage the road structure, so matching waste recovery equipment must be deployed alongside cleaning work.

5. Wellroad High-Pressure Water Removal Vehicle

Wellroad high-pressure water jet cleaning and removal equipment is applicable to stripping all types of road markings and cleaning surface grime on markings. Its construction site generates zero dust, solid residues or sewage, thoroughly resolving long-standing industry pain points associated with traditional marking removal and non-recycling high-pressure water cleaning: incomplete removal, severe pavement damage, dust and sewage pollution, frequent equipment breakdowns and low construction efficiency. It is a special cleaning and removal machine featuring minimal labor input, high working efficiency, superior construction safety, energy conservation and environmental friendliness.

Since its launch, the Wellroad high-pressure water removal vehicle has won widespread acclaim across the industry for its outstanding efficiency and continuously optimized cleaning performance.
